I don’t generally think of myself as OCD. One only has to visit my house when we don’t have guests coming to see that. I do, however, have a *ahem* little bit of a stubborn streak. Ask my husband (well…on second thought…don’t). Anyway, he will be the first to tell you that if I can’t find something, I will tear apart the house looking for that item until I have exhausted myself, only to start the search over again after rest and refreshments. Much like the woman who loses her coin, I too will search high and low to find it and rejoice when I do!
That being said, I am also a super sleuth when it comes to looking for something on the internet. Case in point- there was this AMAZING, no I mean A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, coffee cake mix from Williams Sonoma that I cannot get over. I worked there for 5 or 6 Christmases plus an additional 2 or 3 years (those Christmases included in the numbers above), stocking shelves, unpacking boxes, and doing new floor sets. In all that time, I had never experienced the ecstasy that is their Cinnamon Streusel Coffee Cake Mix. It wasn’t until 6 months after I left that I had my first bite of this mouthwateringly delicious cake.
My mom brought it after my C-Section.
It was divine.
It was delicious.
It was everything a coffee cake should be and more.
It was a little under baked.
I *may* have eaten a little more at a time then I should have.
I told my mom I needed more. She told me my beloved WS did not carry said mix anymore. Whaaa???!!!!! But how could it be? It was amazing. I was heart broken. But then, a glimmer of hope. My mom brought me a Pumpkin coffee cake mix from WS. It was fate. (it was also a seasonal item). I treasured it. I wouldn’t make it until an opportune time (when there were plenty of other people around in case I couldn’t contain myself- it’s called accountability people!) So I waited, and waited. I finally used it for a Balloon Crew event. It was

Well, remember how it was seasonal? I guess it wasn’t as big of a seller as I would have liked because it didn’t come back. Luckily for me, my mom had another in her pantry she offered me.
It was at this point I began to go on the offense. I couldn’t continue to hope that WS would come out with a coffee cake mix again. I needed a recipe. So I began searching the nets, looking through images to find that perfect crumble, that perfectly moist cake, that streusel that would leave you to smile contentedly knowing you had tasted a little bit of heaven (okay- that’s probably overly dramatic, but it was seriously good!)
So I searched, and searched, and searched. Only to come up empty handed. Thus, I continue the search for the best coffee cake recipe. I need help. I know. What can I say? It’s a favorite that I like to indulge in about once a year (that’s all my pants can afford).
The only thing that I have found that is similar and *almost* as good as the WS mix is the Krusteaz Crumb Cake (see below). That stuff is GOOD! If I could find a recipe for it, I would be a happy camper.
So there you have it, my quest for the BEST coffee cake recipe ever. I haven’t found it yet, but I’m hoping someone out there in cyber land has a recipe that they might want to share with me?! Let me say though, it has to have the perfect ratio of cake to crumb mix. The crumble is where it’s at people. I like the sweetness, a hint of saltiness, and a nice crunch that spreads the sugar/butter mixture into the bite making it perfection. Send me the recipes!
